Nigeria: Minister Offers Automatic Employment to NYSC Award Winners

20 March 2008

In order to encourage selfless service to the nation and to rekindle hope that hard work pays, the FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, has offered automatic employment to five out-going youth corps members who distinguished themselves when they served in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Minister gave this directive Monday at the FCT Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.

He assured all Nigerians that there was hope in Nigeria and that any contribution made to the development of the Federal Capital Territory and the country in general, however small would surely be recognised and rewarded.

Umar charged all residents of the Federal Capital Territory to always put in their best in whatever position they find themselves reiterating that such contributions would propel the society to a better level.

While promising continuous support to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), he advised the NYSC officials to remain above board by being fair and transparent in selecting the award winners so that "the best will always be the best".

The Minister presented a brand new Toyota Hilux Vehicle to the director general of the NYSC for use by the FCT NYSC office to reduce their logistic problems.

Responding, the director general of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Yusuf Bomai thanked the FCT Minister for the gesture and challenged the 36 state Governors of the federation to emulate the good work of the minister.

He called for a legislation to make it mandatory for the three tiers of governments to contribute to the scheme to enable the organisation take care of the ever increasing number of corps members mobilised every year.

The five lucky on-going corps members were Agbo Christiana Obiora from Enugu state, Adetokunbo Olatimbo from Ondo State, Orji Helen from Imo State; Joy E. Okpebho from Edo State and a physically challenged Christiana Tedoo Mnena from Benue State. (NAN).
