Nigeria: Meningitis Outbreak in Zaria

Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM) is reported to have killed one person in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Three persons were said to be on admission in the hospital following an outbreak of the disease in the area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria reports that cases suspected to be meningitis were recorded in a private clinic in the town.

Dr Isah Yusha'u, the Director of Nagari Hospital, Wusasa road, Zaria, who confirmed the suspected killer disease, said the hospital had recorded four cases out of which one person died.

Yusha'u said the patients were brought to his hospital from the nearby villages for treatment.

Ysha'u said the deceased, identified as Malam Salisu Umar, was referred to the hospital from Likoro village in Kudan local government area of Kaduna State.

He also said another patient came from Birnin Gwari local government Area, while the remaining two came from Bakori local government area in Katsina State.

He said three of the four patients were successfully treated and discharged.

When contacted, the chief medical director, Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria, Dr Habila Mu'azu, however, said the hospital did not record any case of meningitis. (NAN)
