The South African Beekman Brothers Group has announced the start of construction work on the first luxury apartments in its "San Martinho Beach Club" in the southern Mozambican tourist resort of Bilene.

A release from Beekman Brothers describes the Beach club as "a lifestyle development on 44 hectares of pristine land, boasting 1.3 kilometres of beachfront property". There will be five "villages" with a total of 340 villas and luxury apartments.

There will be a private marina with direct access to Bilene lagoon and to the Indian Ocean. Also planned are a scuba diving centre, nature trails, swimming pools, beach bars, restaurants, a children's play park and "an exclusive beauty spa".

The villas and apartments are offered to investors at a starting price of 40,000 US dollars for a 50 year lease renewable for a further 50 years. The property can be purchased outright, with prices starting at 299,000 dollars.

"Investors will have the choice of luxury beach front apartments, tranquil inshore villas or upbeat marina apartments, each with its own floating jetty, allowing boating enthusiasts and ski-boat fisherman access to the lagoon and the ocean from the comfort of their own patio", says the release.

Beekman Brothers say they are implementing a substantial social programme from which all inhabitants of Bilene should benefit. This includes building a new sewage plant and connecting it to Bilene town. All hotels in the area will be required to connect to this new sewage line.

The company promises to modernize the Bilene water supply system, to launch a mosquito control programme and upgrade the local health centre, church and airstrip.

The project will employ 1,200 Mozambican workers during the construction phase, and once operational 240 permanent jobs will be created at the Beach Club. The resort also promises to support local fisherman who use environmentally sustainable methods.
