The Management of Firestone Liberia, through its Medical Department, is providing a two-month intensive clinical training to twelve nursing students from the Cuttington University located in Suakoko, Bong County. The training began March 3, 2008, and will end on May 6, 2008.
The training, which is currently taking place at the Firestone Health Center in Harbel, Margibi County, is aimed at providing the students with the practical skills and knowledge in their field of studies.
According to the Superintendent of Nursing at the Firestone Health Center, Mr. Gilewulu V.L.K. Bannah, it is important that Firestone provides the clinical skills to the students saying "considering the health needs of Liberia, it is incumbent upon every medical institution and practitioner to assist in preparing health workers."
Mr.Bannah then lauded the students for their performance so far since the onset of the program. He said Firestone has played host to a number of medical students from several medical institutions around the country, including the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia, the Tubman National Institution of Medical Arts (TNIMA), at the JFK Hospital in Monrovia and the Phebe School of Nursing in Bong County, among others. He then used the occasion to call on the students to utilize the professional knowledge they are acquiring as part of efforts to promote the health care delivery system of Liberia.
For her part, student Masue David thanked the Management of Firestone for the opportunity provided them to practice what they have learned over the years. She described their being with the hospital as a laudable educational experience, especially interacting with seasoned medical practitioners of Firestone.
It can be recalled that twenty-two (22) nursing students from the Cuttington University School of Nursing in Suakoko, Bong County on November 26, 2007, arrived at the Firestone Medical Center and underwent similar training.
The Firestone Medical Center is providing quality healthcare for its employees and their families. The medical staff received approximately nine thousand (9,000) patient visits monthly plus other medical services provided by mobile clinics where doctors and nurses treat patients in various communities within the concession area. Firestone Liberia continues to support the Government of Liberia/ UNICEF vaccination campaign for the eradication of childhood diseases. Early last year (2007), the Firestone Medical Center was presented a certificate of appreciation by the Class of 2006/2007 of the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine as the most cooperative clinical institution in the country.
