Kenya: Njue Challenges New Coalition

Nairobi — The coalition Government must address the problems facing Kenyans and seek to unite them, John Cardinal Njue has said.

Njue said the power-sharing deal between President Kibaki and Mr Raila Odinga should tackle the real issues dividing Kenyans.

He said the law must take its course and perpetrators of post-election violence punished. "This problem should be solved once and for all so that in the event of a similar situation tomorrow, a precedent will have been set," he said.

Njue spoke to journalists after presiding over the Holy Thursday Mass for the clergy at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi, on Thursday.

Holy Thursday marks the beginning of a three-day Easter event that culminates with the end of 40 days of fasting.

Today, Catholics will mark Good Friday, and churches commemorating the death of Jesus Christ.

The Cardinal said there was need for reconciliation and the deal between Kibaki and Raila had provided an opportunity.

Njue also called on the Government to resettle the displaced.

Meanwhile, retired Catholic Archbishop Ndingi Mwana a'Nzeki has praised plans for a Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission.

Ndingi said rifts caused by the post-election crisis required Kenyans to reflect and reason with sober minds.

Speaking at St Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Murang'a, Ndingi said the commission's terms of service required careful consideration to ensure it delivers.

"I have high hopes that if given proper terms of service, it can help to unite the nation and heal wounds," he said.
