Kenya: You're True Ally, VP Tells China

21 March 2008

Nairobi — Vice-President, Mr Kalonzo Musyoka, has commended China and other friendly countries for standing in solidarity with Kenya during the post-election crisis.

Kalonzo particularly thanked the Chinese Government for not issuing negative travel advisories to its citizens.

Several countries had warned their nationals against visiting Kenya at the height of the political stalemate.

Kalonzo said the Government appreciated China's help to reconstruct two learning institutions destroyed in the violence.

"This is indeed a demonstration of good friendship. China came in at a time of need and expressed willingness to help in national healing and reconstruction," he said.

The Vice-President spoke on Wednesday evening at a cocktail hosted by the China Radio International and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

The event was in honour of a Chinese media delegation.

The delegation comprises representatives of 19 TV stations in China.

They are in the country for one week to shoot documentaries.

Kalonzo praised China's relationship with Africa, saying the Asian giant understood better the plight of the continent and the best approach in tackling her challenges.

He said Kenya would continue respecting China and expressed confidence that the relationship would grow.

He described the bilateral relationship historical with regular high-level exchange visits.

The minister for Information and Communications, Mr Samuel Poghisio, described the visit timely, saying tourism had suffered due to violence.

Tourism PS, Ms Rebecca Nabutola, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Mr Zhang Ming, and Kibwezi MP, Prof Philip Kaloki, were present.
