Kampala — THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has sued Made In Italy and Leonardo Da Vinci to recover over sh1.2b in taxes.
The Commercial Division of the High Court has given the two Italian firms 15 days to file their defence.
"Should you fail to file a defence within the prescribed period, the plaintiff may proceed with the suit and judgment may be entered in your absence," the summons signed by the registrar read.
The tax body claimed that the Made In Italy failed to remit sh401m in Value Added Tax and sh838m in corporation tax.
Made in Italy owns the Italian Restaurant in Bugolobi near the Shell petrol station, Italiana Supermarket in Muyenga and a warehouse in Wandegeya.
URA wants the court to order Leonardo Da Vinci to account for all the properties belonging to the Made In Italy in its possession.
It also seeks a declaration that a sale agreement between Made In Italy and Leonardo Da Vinci was made allegedly to avoid paying the outstanding taxes totalling to sh2.4
URA added that the agreement was not stamped as required by the registration of Stamps Documents Act.
Recently, URA closed down businesses run by the two firms.
