Somalia's interim Prime Minister, Nur "Adde" Hassan Hussein, met with clan elders in the capital Mogadishu to discuss the Prime Minister's approach to national reconciliation.

The Sunday meeting, held at the Mogadishu headquarters of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), was attended by Mohamed Hassan Haad, chairman of the Hawiye Tradition and Unity Council.

Both Prime Minister Nur Adde and Mr. Haad spoke with local reporters following the hours-long meeting, with both sides welcoming the face-to-face meeting as a first step on the long road to reconciliation.

The Hawiye Council, which claims to represent the Hawiye clan that dominates Mogadishu, is a self-appointed council of elders, but enjoys local support due to their vocal opposition to the unpopular presence of Ethiopian troops.

Mr. Haad said the Prime Minister handed him a document detailing the two-tier reconciliation process, which includes 'community' and 'political' reconciliation aimed at resolving Somalia's myriad conflicts.

The two sides exchanged ideas and the meeting ended with Hawiye Council elders promising to read over the Prime Minister's document and returning for a follow-up meeting, according to Mr. Haad.

It is not clear how much influence the Hawiye Council has with insurgent groups waging war on Prime Minister Nur Adde's interim government, but the most powerful insurgent group, al-Shabaab, has vowed to continue their guerrilla war despite the Prime Minister's reconciliatory overtures.
