Nairobi — Violence in the troubled Molo town has subsided, the Officer Commanding Police Division, Mr Litabalia Achesa has said.

Achesa attributed the relative calm to various peace meetings held between rival communities.

The Provincial Administration has been holding public meetings to reconcile communities in the troubled district.

"We have a held a number of meetings and the situation has now improved," the OCPD said.

He said the meetings, organised by newly posted DC, Mrs Katee Mwanza, and the area security team, target youths.

The district security team has addressed peace rallies at Elburgon, Keringet, Molo town and Olenguruone.

Achesa said more security officers had been deployed along the Molo-Olenguruone road to allow free movement of people out of the troubled area.

"We are also providing police escort to residents who find it difficult to access their farms," he said.

Violence has continued despite the signing of a peace deal between President Kibaki and Prime Minister-designate, Mr Raila Odinga.

Molo town has been a no-go zone. In Kuresoi, farmers have kept off their farms for fear of attacks.

Despite the calm, a man was shot dead with an arrow at Mung'etho area on Easter Friday.

Christians who had turned up for the Easter procession condemned the incident.

The OCPD said the incident had not been reported to his office but promised to investigate.
