TELECOMMUNICATION masts do not pose a serious health threat, the executive director of the National Environmental Management Authority, has assured Ugandans.

"Scientific information available is that radiation from the masts is so low compared to other radiation received such as the one from mobile telephones," Aryamanya Mugisha told the parliamentary committee on Information, Communication Technology on Thursday.

The committee, chaired by Edward Baliddawa, told Mugisha that they had received complaints from residents of Kyambogo, Mbuya, Amagoro in Tororo, Kumi, Mbale and Gulu that masts were being erected without the consent of local communities.

The residents, he said, had also complained that they had not been sensitised about the effect of the masts on their health.

Aryamanya had also been invited to the committee to explain why his organisation takes long to approve applications by telecommunication companies operating in Uganda regarding erection of masts.

Peter Mwesigwa, the Uganda Communications Commission technical manager said they would come up with guidelines to have the telecommunications companies share masts wherever technically feasible.
