LIBYAN leader Col. Muammar Gadaffi's statements that the Bible was doctored were inflammatory and dangerous, a senior NRM member has noted.

Capt. Mike Mukula, the NRM vice-chairman for the eastern region, said Gadaffi's remarks can cause religious divisions.

Gadaffi made the remarks at Nakivubo Stadium on Wednesday where he led Muslims in prayers to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad. Mukula saluted Gadaffi for standing by Ugandans, being a Pan-Africanist and completing the construction of the Old Kampala Mosque, but wondered how he would unite Africa with such statements.

"If he is talking about forming one African state and at the same time making such divisive statements, then there is going to be a very big problem," he said in an interview on Friday.

Mukula urged Ugandans to ignore Gadaffi's remarks.

Mukula reminded Gadaffi that Africa is a multi-religious, multi-racial and multi-ethnic continent whose diverse people need to be respected the way they are.

"It was anti-African of Gadaffi to issue such a statement which can instigate hate and religious divide in a continent we all cherish and wish to unite," Mukula added.

The former MP revealed that over 87% of Ugandans are Christians just like most of the people living in Sub-Saharan Africa.

"It is quite interesting that most of the presidents in Africa including his host (President Yoweri Museveni) were sworn-in using that very Bible he called fake.
