Cuito Cuanavale

The President of ANC, Jacob Zuma Saturday here praised all soldiers who passed away during the Cuito Cuanavale battle, on 22 March 1988.

Speaking at the rally that marks the celebration of this battle's 20th anniversary, to be marked on Sunday, Jacob Zuma referred that the moment serves to remember the capacity and victory of the ex-FAPLA forces, of Swapo, of ANC and of the Cuban forces against the Apartheid forces, which created stability in some countries of the Southern African region.

"This victory changed in a certain way the policy and the correlation of forces in the region, mainly in the founding of movements for the liberation of Namibia and South Africa", referred the ANC leader who at the occasion expressed his gratitude to the contribution of Cuban forces who jointly with the ex-FAPLA forces defeated the invading South African forces.

Jacob Zuma defended that the history of the Cuito Cuanavale battle should be divulged in books and in other means of communication so that future generations learn about the history of their respective countries.

The event, which was presided over by the speaker of the National Assembly (Angolan Parliament), Roberto Victor de Almeida, also counted on speeches by the official of the Russian Federation Council, Victor Sokolovisk, of the Defence minister of Namibia, Charles Namoloh, and of the Cuban general, Leopoldo Cintras Frias.

After the rally, the delegations travelled to an area where the most intense battles happened, on the banks of Ntumbo and Chanbinga Rivers.
