Cuito Cuanavale

The monument to honour the fighters who fell in the Cuito Cuanavale Battle, whose foundation stone was laid Saturday by the National Assembly (Angolan Parliament) speaker, Roberto de Almeida, will be inaugurated in December this year.

The memorial will haa a pyramid shape that symbolise the resistence and courage of the fighters of the battle and a statue. It will also have two water mirrors to symbolise the Cuito and Cuanavale rivers.

Three pillars representing the three branches of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) will also be part of the monument.

The Cuito Cuanavale Battle took place on March 23, 1988, when the then colligated forces of Angola (ex-FAPLA) and Cuba defeated the invading army of the South Africa apartheid regime.

The defeat of the South African army led to the signing of the New York accord and the independence of Namibia and democratisation of South Africa. With an area of 35.610 square kilometres, Cuito Cuanavale, Kuando Kubango province, has a population estimated at 94,737 inhabitants.
