Zimbabwe: 8 Perish in Easter Holiday Accidents

Eight people have so far died in 118 road accidents countrywide since the beginning of the Easter holiday on Friday.

Police chief spokesman Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena yesterday attributed the road accidents to speeding, negligent driving and defective vehicles. "As from 4pm on Saturday to 9am this morning we have recorded 76 road accidents which resulted in three deaths and 25 injuries."

In Harare, one person was killed and another one died in Mashonaland East where two people were injured.

Two people were injured in Mashonaland Central.

In Masvingo, one person was killed while five others were injured. In Midlands no deaths were recorded but six people were injured in separate road accidents.

No accidents were recorded in Matabelaland North while four people were injured in road accidents in Bulawayo.

A total of 118 accidents have been recorded throughout the country in which 76 people were injured. During the same time last year 116 people were injured in a total of 131 accidents recorded countrywide.

Asst Comm Bvudzijena urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving especially today when most people will be returning to their homes after the holidays.
