Uganda: First Lady Advises On Parenting

24 March 2008

Butaleja / Tororo — THE first lady, Ms Janet Museveni, has appealed to parents to appreciate their God-given task of nurturing and bringing up children. She warned them against apportioning their responsibilities to institutions like schools, the church or government.

She was speaking at a two-day parenting seminar for Tororo and Butaleja districts which took place last week in Butaleja town. Hundreds of parents, civil society, political and religious leaders and youth attended the seminar which was organised by the Uganda Youth Forum with the support of the Inter Religious Council and the United States Agency for International Development .

Ms Museveni attributed the affliction of the lives of youth by diseases such as HIV/Aids and immorality to parents who have abdicated their parenting responsibility. She said all children belong to parents and families and that their nurturing and morality is a responsibility of parents.

Ms Museveni said the death of youth due to immorality should also be blamed on present-day generation of parents.
