AT least 50 Chambishi Copper Smelter (CCS) employees have been identified as ring leaders in the recent riots at the plant and their suspensions are still in force while negotiations for improved salaries , conditions of service have resumed.

National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) president, Mundia Sikufele said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that those identified as ring leaders in the recent riots at the project under construction, were still being investigated.

Mr Sikufele said all the other workers had been re-instated and that the union was happy with the development.

He said the negotiations for salary and improved conditions of service had since resumed and urged the workers to be calm as they awaited the outcome.

Mr Sikufele urged the workers to refrain from resorting to violence whenever they had a grievance.

"As a union we are just urging the workers to ensure they handle such issues through the union and not to resort to violence. Let the workers realise that there is a union in place, through which labour matters should be handled.

"Right now, about 50 workers are still on suspension and are being investigated after being identified as ring leaders," Mr Sikufele said.

Early this month, workers at the CCS went on strike and rioted, damaging company property worth K500 million.

Management decided to dismiss all the 500 workers but asked them to exculpate themselves.

This resulted in re-instating several of them except those identified as ring leaders.
