Uganda: Malaria Consortium Gets Sh200m Boost

Kampala — THE MTN Foundation, has donated sh200m to Malaria Consortium to support its activities in the fight against malaria.

During the handover of a dummy cheque worth sh200m at Malaria Consortium offices in Kololo recently, the foundation's chairman, George Egaddu, emphasised the foundation's commitment to the malaria eradication drive in Uganda.

"This partnership will not only contribute to a malaria free society, but will also bring us a step closer to achieving the millennium development goals," he said.

Malaria Consortium is a non-profit organisation that works to combat malaria and other communicable diseases among the poorest and most vulnerable people in Africa and Asia.

Egaddu said the donation was the foundation's first venture in people's lives since its launch in 2007.

"Regardless of the numerous relentless efforts displayed by organisations like the Malaria Consortium, malaria is still one of the worst killer diseases.

It is up to responsible corporate citizens to lend a hand to this worthwhile cause," he said.

The MTN Foundation has interventions in six programme areas which include education (science and technology), health and HIV/Aids, music, arts and culture environment, community development.

The deputy director Malaria Consortium Africa, Dr. James Tibenderana, said the sh200m shall be directed to buying and distribution of insecticide treated nets. It will also be sued to make malaria drugs available to communities.
