Kampala — MOST of the diseases affecting people in Kabale district are caused by poor hygiene and sanitation, the president of the Lions Club of Kampala Central has said.
Eleanor Bageine told journalists at Buhara health centre that shortage of clean water and lack of latrines had worsened the situation. She was speaking at the end of a one-day medical camp organised by the Lions Club.
A team of five doctors, five nurses and three medical assistants treated over 1,000 patients with cases ranging from headaches, stomach ulcers to dental and sight problems.
Bageine said the camp was also sponsored Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries, which contributed drugs and money worth over sh800m. Patients with complicated cases were referred to Rugarama Health Centre in the town for free treatment.
Meanwhile, the Ndorwa East MP, Wilfred Niwagaba, has asked the local councils in Kabale to enact by-laws to regulate consumption of alcohol, especially potent gin.
