THE Chairman of Steyr Nigeria Ltd., Bauchi, Alhaji Bello Kirfi says about N500 million is required for the upgrading of the motor assembly plant. Kirfi disclosed this at the weekend in Bauchi while conducting the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Charles Ugwu round the company.

He told the Minister that the money would be used to replace the company's obsolete machines and upgrade other vital equipment.

After the refurbishment, Kirfi said that the company would be in a position to assemble tractors, civilian and military trucks including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs).

According to him, the company recently entered into a contractual agreement worth N500 million with the Bauchi State government.

He said that the company was also collaborating with the state in the area of capacity building of its teeming youths.

Kirfi said that the youths were being trained on tractor operations and maintenance as well as in the areas of carpentry, welding, mechanical and electrical maintenance skills.

He told the Minister that the federal government recently awarded a contract worth N321 million

to the company for the supply of agricultural tractors and implements.

The Chairman gave assurances that the contract would be executed on time, saying that it was

being handled in conjuction with the company's technical partner, LS Cable of South Korea.

Kirfi appealed for more government patronage and pleaded for easy access to the National

Automotive Funds to enable the Steyr Nigeria Ltd. benefit from it.

He also called for the upward review of import tarrifs being paid on Fully Built Units (FBU) to protect the local assembly plants.

Ugwu in his response said that he would soon convene a meeting of operators of FBU and local assembly plants as part of efforts to solve the problems facing automobile industry.
