Political Parties and Civil Society Groups in the country have advanced a proposal for the holding of a national conference to discuss the future of Liberia.

The over one hundred persons representing Political Parties and Civil Society Organizations have also committed themselves to establish a strong and functional organizations at all level.

Delivering the keynote addressed at the opening of the workshop, the Chairman of the Governance Commission(GC) Dr. Amos Sawyer proposed the holding of a national conference on the future of Liberia.

Dr. Sawyer also suggested that Liberia institute constitutional reform that would give multiplicity of power to political parties and broaden national governance.

The groups made these recommendations at the end of a two-day workshop aimed at strengthening political party system in Liberia organized by the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

The groups are also requesting funding from National Government for parties or coalition that obtained ten percent in the National Legislature.

The groups also call for political parties to maintain one thousand members in all fifteen counties.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to the resolution of the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the OSIWA Conference which dealt with the critical constitutional issue of fifty percent plus one vote to be declared winner and form part of an absolute majority in National and Legislative Elections in Liberia.

The Political Parties and Civil Society groups vowed to encourage and support women participation with a minimum representation of thirty percent both within national governance level.

The American Group, International Republican Institute (IRI), with funding from the United States Aid for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with UNMIL organized the two-day workshop on the strengthening of Political Party System in Liberia held at the University of Liberia.

At the end of the workshop, some of the participants called on Political Parties and Civil Society groups to take a critical review with consultation of the just ended conference; do self criticism and carry out internal reforms of their activities, with the view of preparing them for the National Conference on the future of Liberia.
