Monrovia
Reports from Grand Kru County have it that a larger number of police officers have deserted their posts due to "hardship", as a result of government's apparent inability to adequately cater to police officers assigned there.
Officer Kelvin Yealuo, the only police officer in Grandcess, Grand Kru County, disclosed to The NEWS that about 36 of his colleagues assigned in the county have left their assignments and are reportedly in Monrovia.
It was observed that no police officers were in several towns such as Big Swan Town, Benweh and Picnicess.
Moreover, the very few police officers who had remained in other parts of the county threatened to abandon their assignments if the situation was not addressed.
In addition to the lack of logistics, salary disbursement is said to be irregular resulting to problems in housing and feeding for the officers.
The plight of the officers is such that most of them are living on the assistance of the residents.
The plight of the officers in Grand Kru County is an obvious threat to law enforcement. It is hoped that government's attention would be drawn to such threats and would therefore act to resolve the situation.
The sustenance of civil authority relies on effective and efficient law enforcement. Thus, the welfare of law enforcers must be of priority.
When officers are disgruntled with central authority and depend on well-off residents for their livelihoods, one can only imagine the impartiality with which they could enforce laws.

Such threats must never be allowed to persist.
