Uganda: Man Hospitalised After Mock Crucifixion

24 March 2008

Kampala — Christians in Luweero broke down into tears after a 25-year old youth, who was participating in a mock demonstration of Jesus' suffering, crucifixion and death, was hospitalised.

Vincent Musisi of Katikamu Catholic Parish carried a heavy wooden cross from the catholic cathedral in Kasana town through Luweero town council to the Anglican cathedral.

The procession that included Luweero Anglican Bishop Evans Mukasa Kisekka and the care taker of the catholic diocese, Msgr. Mathias Kanyerezi among hundreds of other Christians, lasted about four hours.

He was dressed in a white tunic and open shoes similar to those that Jesus wore hours before he met his death at Golgotha. The wooden cross that Musisi carried was estimated to weigh 15kgs. Whenever Musisi fell, he was whipped by muscular young men who acted as the Roman soldiers.

At Luweero Anglican Cathedral, Mr Musisi was laid onto this cross and his hands tied. Nails measuring six inches long were place between his finger and toe gaps before the hammering started.

Most Christians, mainly women, broke down into tears as Musisi screamed loudly. After a short while, Musisi was wrapped in white clothes and taken behind the Cathedral.

Daily Monitor later established that he was admitted at Bishop Acil-Laco Health Centre shortly after the exercise. A friend of his, only identified as Kisawuzi a student at Katikamu Kisule SS said Mr Musisi complained of general body weakness and severe chest pain.

While addressing the congregation, Bishop Evans Mukasa Kisekka called on Christians to resist satanic temptations and focus on scriptures in the Bible.
