Mascom Premier League giants, Township Rollers are expected to take part in the Easter Bonanza Charity Cup scheduled for the Kopong United Ground this weekend.

The tournament is intended to raise funds for charity. It is sponsored by Phakalane Estates. Besides Rollers, the tournament will feature Kopong United, Kopong Classic and Lister City. At least 100 orphans will benefit from the gate-takings from the two-day tournament, which starts on Saturday.

This is not the first time that Rollers have accepted an invitation from Kopong. Towards the end of last year, the club played Kopong Classic in a game which raised around P7,000 for orphans at Kopong Community Secondary School.

Tournament organiser, Adam Maseko told Mmegi Sport yesterday that after raising funds for the students of Kopong secondary, they have identified the disadvantaged out of school children to benefit from the weekend tournament. He pointed out that with the help of the Village Development Committee (VDC), they managed to identify some beneficiaries. Maseko said he has become close to the less-privileged people since his days as a Tirelo Sechaba (TS) participant in Hatsalatladi. "I was a social worker during my TS days and working in a remote area really opened my eyes. Since then, I have told myself that I must do all I can to help those who are disadvantaged," he told Mmegi Sport.

Though he has been transferred to Nanogang Junior Secondary in Gaborone, Maseko says that the people of Kopong remain close to his heart and he will do his best to assist them. "The chief (Michael Moroka) has been very supportive and this encourages me to help to improve the lives of others. The games will also provide the players from Kopong teams to get exposure," he said.

The managing director of Phakalane Estates, Lesang Magang said it is part of their responsibility as an organisation to help those in need. He pointed out that when Maseko approached them, they did not hesitate to sponsor the tournament especially with the involvement of Rollers. "The presence of a Premiership club add the much-needed hype to this tournament. I urge those football supporters in and around Kopong to go and support this initiative. This will be a kind of an outing to the supporters," he said. Magang advised the soccer fans that the P10 they will pay at the gate as an admission fee, will change the lives of many people. Just like Maseko, the flamboyant businessman believes that the tournament will help in exposing young talent in the area.

Rollers' managing director, Somerset Gobuiwang said they will bring their strongest squad to the village for the event. "This is not the first time we go and help in Kopong and we are doing this as part of our social responsibility," he said.
