Botswana: Tricky Weekend for Blue Diamonds

Chippa Legodimo

20 March 2008

Relegation-haunted Blue Diamonds have another difficult weekend away to Kgabosetso Southern Callies in Moshupa in a First Division South duel.

The Jwaneng side has not yet given up hope of avoiding the axe and go into the match with only one thing in mind - to get maximum points on Saturday.

Diamonds meet a side that is likely to push for a top four finish and the match will not be easy for both clubs. Kgabosetso will rely on the cheers from their home supporters to motivate them to a win while Blue Diamonds' mental strength could be the deciding factor. On Saturday, Tlokweng United welcome tricky Young Strikers at Naughty Boys Ground.

The Tlokweng side is fighting for promotion to the Mascom Premier League and a win against Naughty Boys could enhance their chances. Abashante's fans are passionate about their team and they have many reasons to come to the match in large numbers because the promotion dream is within reach. It was even closer some three weeks ago until top of the log Mochudi Buffaloes nailed them 1-0 in Mochudi. But the defeat did not cause much damage as they only slipped one place down from position four to five.

Former Zebras' skipper Busang 'Shana' Rasefako played a pivotal role to help Naughty Boys gain promotion four years ago after he left Jwaneng Comets and now he is at Tlokweng United. He is expected to repeat the feat and send another Tlokweng side to the top league in the country. He has a double responsibility of guiding the youngsters while at the same time scoring important goals like he did at Naughty Boys to condemn Flamengo Santos to the lower division when he struck twice in the last game. Young Strikers have a number of tricky youngsters and Rasefako and company might find themselves chasing shadows the same way Naughty Boys did when the two met in their second round match.

In another game on Saturday, Eastern Tigers visit unpredictable Wonder Sporting at SSG Ground. Killer Giants will attempt to dislodge Buffaloes from the top of the log when they meet third-placed Naughty Boys in Tlokweng on Sunday. Buffaloes host Gantsi Terrors in Mochudi hoping to maintain their lead at the top of the table. They are only a point ahead of Killer Giants. Terrors on the other hand will do everything to avoid dropping further into the relegation zone.

Prisons XI are not happy to be in fourth place and they would want to use their match against Masitaoka to climb higher and brighten their chances of a quick return to the elite league. But everybody knows how difficult it is to beat Masitaoka in Molepolole and this could work against Prisons XI.
