The police air wing is planned to start operations by January next year after the purchase of two helicopters, a senior official has said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Dipheko Motube told Mmegi that the helicopters will be in the country by December this year. He said the third helicopter will arrive in August next year.

Over six officers are training in the United States in aircraft engineering, while another six are training as pilots in neighbouring South Africa. Officers who will serve as air traffic controllers are training locally at the Department of Civil Aviation.

Most of them will complete their training next year. Motube revealed that during the 2008-2009 financial year, the police will build eight new stations in Mahalapye, Palapye, Maitengwe, Mmathubudukwane, Martins Drift, Mmashoro, Semolale and Gantsi. He said that other major projects to be undertaken are the construction of the Science Forensic Laboratory in the Village (Gaborone), the construction of accommodation houses in Block 10 (Gaborone) and Botshabelo (Selebi-Phikwe), and Explosives Blast Range at the Police College in Otse.

He said that Mmadinare, Gerald Estates in Francistown and Matsiloje police stations are being designed and may be considered in the next financial year.

Motube said that the new police stations will not affect the intake at the Otse Police College since they have long been planned for. "When we announce that we need a police station at a certain place, everything would have long been calculated," he said.

Recently MPs proposed that the police should not only be interested in building big stations but should consider temporary structures like porta-camps. He said that currently, there are several police porta-camps around the country in places like Phakalane, Maun and Mmadinare. He added that Special Constables have been provided with bicycles for patrols.
