Nairobi — Muslims thronged the streets of Mombasa on Sunday evening to celebrate the birth of Prophet Mohammed in a procession that started at Nurein Mosque near Uhuru Gardens.
Police controlled traffic to reduce jams during the procession.
Among those who took part in the procession were businessman Tahir Sheikh Said, popularly known as TSS, nominated MP Sheikh Mohamed Dor and Mombasa mayor Ahmed Mohdhar.
Mr Said said the celebration of the prophet's birthday came at the right time when the country was healing from the post-election violence.
"Elections skirmishes set this country back in time but with the grand coalition in place, hopes of prosperity run high in every aspect of life," he said.
He explained that during the month-long celebrations of Maulid, Muslims would use the occasion to offer special prayers for peace and unity in the country.
Speaking outside Mbaruk Mosque, Mr Mohdhar said the council had managed to improve garbage collection in the town although its trucks needed repairs.
"We are not at our best but since we came into office we have tried to clean the town to the required standards," he said.
On the abandoned site where Manor Hotel once stood, the mayor said the council was in contact with the owner to ensure street families did not use it as a hideout.
To reduce the numbers of beggars who flock the town on Fridays, the mayor asked those who give alms to stop to discourage the habit.
Mr Mohdhar said the council was trying to improve its sewerage system but residents were also to blame for misusing the service.
