Kenya Film Commission (KFC) has launched a programme to promote Kenya as a key film-shooting destination in Africa.

Managing Director, Mr David Maingi said the ten point integrated film development programme would promote Kenya's unique features and create opportunities for local producers. "The first programme is to create a brand around shooting Africa in Kenya through marketing and reputation building in target markets," he said.

Maingi said Kenya would attend all film expos globally to expose the unique film features to decision makers and create linkages with influential players in all leading international markets.

"We want to be sure we enjoy top of the mind awareness among the critical film decision-makers worldwide. Kenya should be a synonym for shooting in Africa," said Maingi in a statement.

Maingi said KFC would encourage industry-academia initiatives to promote entrepreneurship in the film industry. The enterprise programme will work with business schools and the private sector to promote the concept.

"It is unfortunate that a number of artistes focus only on the production, forgetting that business and marketing is a key plank in creating a successful film," Maingi said.

He said the industry-academia relationship would be useful in transferring business skills from successful markets to develop capacities for running films in Kenya.

The key pillars will be distribution, audio, intellectual property and copyrights.

"We have a big appetite for developing a sophisticated film market, where there is robust distribution both at local and international levels," added Maingi. "We want to make watching film in Kenya a lifestyle issue, especially by having mobile cinemas increasingly showing local content."
