MOSES Kipsiro and Boniface Kiprop will have an extra incentive to run for at the World Cross Country Championships, when they fight for the country's maiden individual medal in the senior category.
The international athletics body - IAAF - has staked sh485m for the top performers in both the individual and team categories at the event due this Sunday. The body announced the cash prizes yesterday.
Despite having a bronze and two silver individual medals in the junior category courtesy of Boniface Kiprop, Uganda is yet to win an individual senior medal. The senior team settled for bronze during last year's event in Mombasa.
The winner in the senior men is poised to walk off with sh52m, while the winning team will settle for sh34.6m.
"Only the senior men and women teams will be eligible for the prizes," read a statement on the official website. Junior runners do not get cash prizes but settle for medals at all IAAF world events.
Payment, however, is dependent on the athletes clearing the anti-doping procedures, according to IAAF.
Uganda's team departs Thursday for the event due in Edinburgh, Scotland.
*LAZARUS Inyar started his campaign for a Beijing Olympic Games slot by getting a double in the sprints at the first Kampala Athletics trial at Kyambogo on Saturday. Inyar registered the fastest time in the 100m.
