Zimbabwe: Senior ZDF Officer Chadehumbe Dies

Harare — A senior Zimbabwe Defence Forces officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Barnabas Chadehumbe, known by his Chimurenga name Teyayi Chimbambaira, has died.

Lt-Col Chadehumbe - who died on Sunday at West End Clinic after a short illness - was 51. Born in Mhondoro, Lt-Col Chadehumbe did his secondary education at Makumbe Visitation Mission before he left to join the Liberation Struggle in Zambia in 1975.

He was trained at Nachingweya Training Camp in Tanzania, graduating in 1977 under the "Songabele" group. After receiving his basic training, he returned to Mozambique as a political commissar and was at Chimoio when the infamous Rhodesian raids on the camp occurred. He went to Romania in 1979 for a regular officers' cadet training which he completed in 1981 and returned home where he was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army as a lieutenant. Lt-Col Chadehumbe is a graduate of the Command and Staff Course among other military courses and a holder of a Bachelor of Arts General gegree. He also attended various military and civilian courses during his military career rising through the ranks from lieutenant to lieutenant-colonel.

At the time of his death, he held the following awards: Liberation Medal, Independence Medal, Ten Years Service Medal, Long and Exemplary Service Medal, Mozambique Campaign Medal and the Democratic Republic of Congo Campaign Medal.

Mourners are gathered at Cranborne West Officers Marriage Quarters. funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. He is survived by his wife Gladys and five children.
