The Kora-All Africa Music awards have been revived after a two-year lapse owing to logistical problems.

Kora, whose main objective is to unite Africans through celebration of excellence, was put on hold following some logistical reasons.

The decision was, however, met with an outcry from arts critics who felt that African musicians had been robbed of their own home grown awards.

Announcing the revival Mathias Bangure, the Kora representative for Zimbabwe said entries had been opened until April 15, 2008.

This year's edition would be held in Lagos in Nigeria for the first time after a decade of successful hosting by neighbouring South Africa.

He said the awards ceremony would be held on December 6 this year in Tinapa, Cross River State. "You may wonder why we have brought Kora to Nigeria after a decade of its successful hosting in South Africa.

"Kora has moved because Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world in terms of human and natural resources.

"Apart from these, Nigeria is blessed with abundant artistic and musical talents that can hold their own anywhere in the world," said Ernest Coovi Adjovi founder of the awards.

Unlike previous editions, Kora 2008 will also cater for non-regional and regional categories.

Non-regional categories in this year's edition include: best traditional, artist or group, best hip-hop artist or group, best ragga artist or group, best reggae artist or group, best spiritual artist or group, best African video clip, best artiste or group of the Caribbean/Europe Diaspora, best artiste or group of the African/American Diaspora and most promising artiste or group.

The regional categories would include: best artist or group-East Africa, best artist or group Southern Africa, best artist or group -- Central Africa, best artist or group -- West Africa.

The most innovation for Kora 2008 from previous edition is the introduction of a cash price of US$ 1 000 000, which would be given to the "Best Artist or Group of the Continent".

However, the winner of this award would be chosen from the best artists or groups of all the regions.

Since its inception in 1996, over 1000 artists and groups have been nominated and 197 KORA statuettes presented to musicians of African descent from across the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, America and of course throughout the five regions of the African continent.
