POLICE in Chingola have arrested a court interpreter and two others for alleged theft of K33 million from Chililabombwe judiciary account.

The suspects had been on the run since the funds disappeared from the judiciary account in August last year and were only apprehended on Saturday.

Copperbelt police chief, Antoneill Mutentwa, confirmed the arrest of the three suspects in an interview yesterday.

Mr Mutentwa identified the court interpreter asShadreck Kashininkisha, 33, and two others as Edmond Tambatamba and Vernasio Bwalya.

Mr Mutentwa said after intensive investigations, police discovered that a total of K33,150,000 was stolen from the Chililabombwe judiciary account.

He said the court interpreter was believed to be the mastermind behind the withdrawal of funds from the account, as he had allegedly stolen the cheque book.

He said Mr Kashininkisha of G4 Mine township in Chililabombwe was suspected to be the one who stole the cheques, which were later forged.

Mr Mutentwa said Edmond Tambatamba of Lusaka's Helen Kaunda township was paid K15.5 million using a Standard Chartered Bank and the cheque was cashed on the Chililabombwe Standard Chartered Bank branch.

Vernasio Bwalya, 64, of Kitwe's Chimwemwe township was paid K8.5 million through a cheque. Other amounts were withdrawn on different dates last year.

He said the trio was detained at Chingola Central police station.

Tambatamba and Bwalya will be charged with theft, forgery and uttering of false documents while the interpreter will be charged with theft by public servant, forgery and uttering of false document.

Meanwhile, police in Chililabombwe have managed to curb smuggling of mealie meal, which led to critical shortage of the commodity.

Chililabombwe district commissioner, Timothy Musonda, said the area had recently faced a critical shortage of mealie meal.

He commended the police for curbing the illegal mealie meal traders, and he was optimistic that with the combination of State police and immigration officers, mealie meal would not be smuggled out of the country.
