THE University Teaching Hospital (UTH) has recorded 154 casualties during the Easter period, indicating an upward trend from last year's reported cases, hospital spokesperson, Pauline Mbangweta, has said.

In Mazabuka, a cyclist died on the spot when a speeding vehicle hit him as he tried to cross the road while in Livingstone a couple had been admitted to the hospital after a truck rammed into their vehicle.

And Police Inspector General, Ephraim Mateyo, said the service would compile a list of incidents before issuing a comprehensive statement on the crime and accident situation during the long weekend.

Ms Mbangweta said the institution recorded 154 casualties during the weekend and, out of that, 82 were assault cases, 59 were road traffic accidents while five were gunshot victims and the rest were minor injuries.

Ms Mbangweta said the statistics were on the high side as compared to other festive periods and other holidays in previous years.

She said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the victims were from various townships in Lusaka and that most of them were treated and discharged while a few were still admitted to the country's biggest health institution.

Ms Mbangweta said there were a number of bodies brought to the hospital but she did not want to disclose how many, referring the matter to the police service.

She said such cases were recorded by the police and not the UTH.

When contacted for a comment, Mr Mateyo could neither confirm nor deny, saying that the service had not yet compiled the report of the incidents which took place during the long weekend.

Mr Mateyo said since the Easter period had ended, police would today come up with a full report on incidents throughout the country.

And a police officer in Monze is admitted to the hospital with serious injuries after his vehicle hit into the wall.

In the Mazabuka incident, police said 28-year-old Muyunda Mangwato of Apollo township was hit by a Toyota Corolla, registration number ABC 8062 driven by Maybin Mwikamani of Plan 2000 township.

The incident happened two kilometres south of Mazabuka towards Monze at 15:20 hours on Sunday.

On the couple, police said the Toyota Corolla rammed into the truck, injuring the man and the woman.

The man's right arm was fractured while his vehicle was extensively damaged in front.

The police officer in Monze had parked his car which later disengaged, rolled and hit into the wall.
