About 3,000 athletes are expected to participate in the Coca Cola pre-Olympic Torch half marathon to be staged in Dar es Salaam on April 4.

Coca Cola Tanzania marketing manager for East and Central Africa Caroline Mbaga said registration deadline for the participants has been set for April 2.

She said the pre-Olympic Torch relay event is open to all Tanzanians regardless of age or gender. Those interested are to register with Athletics Tanzania (AT) and other centers related to the Olympic Torch relay committee.

The winner of the race will take home Shl million while Sh750,000 and Sh500,000 will be awarded to runners up and third placed finishers for both women and men categories, respectively.

The half marathon route starts at Kinondoni Biafra via Kawawa Road to National Stadium and back to the starting point. Beside the half marathon there will also be a five-km fun race whose route starts at Kinondoni Biafra to Salender Brigde through Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road and back to Biafra.

In related development, former Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) chairman Raphael Kubaga, has urged sports stakeholders in the country to use the Olympic Torch relay for promotion purposes. Kubaga made the call during a media roundtable discussion organised by Coca Cola at New Africa Hotel in Dar es Salaam recently.

He said since Dar es Salaam is the only city earmarked for the tour in the African continent, local sportsmen and women taking part in the relay behave well to create a good image of Tanzania.

Coca Cola Tanzania has set aside Sh300 million to facilitate the Olympic Torch Tour of the country next month.
