Francistown — Although Princess Marina Hospital is overcrowded,it is not a health hazard as it is generally clean.
Answering a question from Specially Elected MP Botsalo Ntuane, health minister Professor Sheila Tlou said her ministry has received consumer commendations on how much cleaner the hospital is compared to a few years ago at the height of the AIDS epidemic.
"Based on the clinical outcomes of patients, and the routine microbiological swabs carried out in different clinical units, there is no evidence to support the statement that Princess Marina Hospital is a health hazard," the minister said.
Professor Tlou said her ministry continues to explore various options of efficiently providing services in the hospitals, which include private public partnerships (PPP), such as outsourcing of non-core functions like cleaning.
She said the health ministry recently undertook a benchmarking exercise to select health facilities in South Africa and the United Kingdom on how such projects are executed. MP Ntuane had asked the minister whether, given the status of uncleanliness at Princess Marina Hospital, are there any measures planned to urgently address the situation which is a health hazard.
