Francistown

Nxolisi Ncube, alleged rapist and assaulter, appeared before the Francistown Magistrate court last week on trial for three counts of rape and two of assault, all of which allegedly occurred last year at Natale Village, some 30km from Francistown.

The 22-year-old Zimbabwean worked as a herd-boy before he did what his employer called "the unexpected" by assaulting his 12-yea-old daughter.

"I hired him on the 13th January, and there were no signs that he was capable of harming anyone; he was well behaved. We were only shocked on the 28th when he took my daughter to the bushes where he assaulted her in what appeared to be an attempted rape. Fortunately, locals found them and managed to scare him in time," said his former employer.

Oteng Mogale, one of the locals that scared Ncube away after they heard screams for help from the bushes, said that though they didn't see who it was, the young victim told them that it was Ncube or Albert as he was also known. But, said Mogale, they were able to identify Ncube by the white pants he wore. The girl's family then reported the matter to the police, who immediately engaged a manhunt.

While the manhunt continued, Ncube is alleged to have wounded a 60-year old woman, by hitting her with a hoe on the head the very following day.

And on that very same day, Ncube's charge sheet continued to grow as he raped yet another woman. Ncube is said to have proceeded to the Majwanaadipela lands in the Natale area, where he is accused of having raped another woman and injured yet another.

On January 30, only two days since the beginning of his serial rapist and assault trail, Ncube raped a 70-year-old woman at her home.

Giving evidence, the 70-year-old told how Ncube not only raped but also continuously punched her during the ordeal.

"Though I didn't see his face I know it was him because neighbours chased after him. I was so terrified that at first at the parade I pointed out to another guy as one who had raped me. It was only when we were at the police station that I saw him and told the police," she said.

The victim's 13-year-old grandson recalled the terrifying ordeal about how he found his grandmother pinned down by the rapist.

"I was sent to the fields to pick some vegetables when it all started. When I came back I stood still at the door of the kitchen; I was terrified to find my grandmother screaming for help with a man on top of her. Though I was still for some time, I ran to the neighbours for help. As we raced back (to the old woman's rescue) the man (accused) ran out."

The 13-year-old continued: "When she came out of the kitchen she looked scruffy, she had blood on her mouth, and she looked different."

Ncube's three- day rampage came to an end when Tati-town Police nabbed him on the 1st February. He will remain in custody for the duration of the case, which continues next month.
