Monrovia

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with development partners, begins a three-day National Workshop today at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex to validate the draft document on Liberia's Food and Agriculture Policy and Strategy (FAPS).

The document, which is being reviewed by a wide range of interested parties, will be validated with a view to incorporating the concerns of stakeholders in the policy.

A release quotes Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Chris Toe as saying that this policy framework will provide direction and scope to activities in the agriculture sector in the medium to long term, and more particularly, enable the sector to contribute meaningfully to achieving the priorities and objectives of the Poverty Reduction Strategy.

As a precursor to drafting the Food and Agriculture Policy and Strategy, the Ministry of Agriculture and its partners undertook a one-year nation-wide comprehensive assessment of the sector in 2007 to determine its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and the way forward.

A major outcome of the assessment was the recognition and confirmation of the urgency for government to prepare a national food and agriculture policy and strategy.

Despite several efforts made by successive Ministers of Agriculture over the years, the Government of Liberia does not have an agriculture policy.

The formulation and subsequent promulgation of the Food and Agriculture Policy and Strategy for Liberia will be a major boost to enhancing national food security and encouraging investment opportunities, and a major indicator of a strengthened Ministry of Agriculture, the release concluded.
