Botswana: A Quiet Easter

editorial

The Good Friday and Easter holidays have come and gone. At the time of going to press, there were no reported fatal road accidents.

If this was a true reflection of the situation during the holidays, then road users need to be commended for driving safely to and from their respective destinations.

Holidays have become an omen because many people lose their lives on the roads. In a lot of instances, drivers have been found to be at the heart of these fatal road accidents. Speeding has always been the major cause of road accidents. Of course there have been cases where drivers just violated road signs ending up in accidents and loss of life.

A lot of education has been carried out to help road users to appreciate that they must obey traffic rules. We just hope that motorists have absorbed that information and are now applying it, hence the reduction in accidents on our roads. Of course, there are still some bad eggs who flagrantly break the law. We urge such people to mend their ways and improve on their behaviour on the roads.

We want to congratulate the Botswana Police Service and the Department of Road Safety for their efforts to ensure that our roads are safe. The roadblocks that they mount throughout the country certainly go a long way in helping to reduce the carnage on our highways. We salute them for their selfless contribution to the safety of the road users. They sacrifice their time for us when we go and see our relatives by being on duty to make sure that we travel safely.

On a sad note, it is disturbing to see that some security people have turned into thieves when they are supposed to be taking care of people's property. What happened at the Department of Customs and Excise warehouse says much about the integrity of some of these public officers. Can they ever be trusted? Talk of an inside job. Shame on these perpetrators!
