Work to establish a 10 Mega Watt Hydro-electric power dam on River Wambabya in Buseruka sub-county Hoima district has kicked off and is to last for a period of two years.

The permanent secretary in the ministry of energy and mineral development Fred Kabagambe Kaliisa told Daily Monitor that a 10 mega watt of Hydro- electric power dam on River Wambabya is under construction by Hydro-max Company an international investor based in India and the project is approximately worth 30 million US dollars.

Kabagambe said that the company is putting up access roads and establishing a camp to house equipment and workers' accommodation and in April real work will kick off.He said, the dam construction will start with building among others a water with a canal to take water from the dam to a power plant to run the turbines to generate electricity.

"The electric lines will be constructed to take power from Wambabya dam in Buseruka to Kinubi electric sub-station in Hoima town for commercial distribution. The commercial commissioning will be in December 2009 where the community will start using the electricity", Kabagambe told Daily Monitor in Hoima over the weekend.

He said the two districts of Hoima and Masindi use only 1 mega watt and Kinyara Sugar works Limited uses 3 mega watts and the remaining 6 mega watts shall be sold to other districts that have electricity power problem.

Kabagambe said government is determined to promote natural resources like potential areas of generating electricity and this is to help the establishment of small scale industries in rural areas as stipulated in the 2006 NRMpresidential and parliamentary elections manifesto.

"The development of potential power areas is to reduce the pressure on the environment and help with the stabilisation of power to address the constant electricity shortfalls which have a negative econmic effect", Kabagambe told Daily Monitor.

Kabagambe disclosed that another 50 Mega Watts of electricity will be generated at the Oil and Gas refinery plant which is to be established at Waraga Oil deposits area.

Work is to start in June this year and by June next year will be complete when the first Oil barrel is expected. The 50 mega watts of electricity at Waraga Oil refinery plant on lake Albert in Hoima District will be out of the by-product Oil Gas refinery process.
