Airport workers across the country will go on strike next month unless the Government increases their salaries and allowances, the secretary general of the Kenya Civil Aviation and Allied Workers Union, Mr Jimmy Mwaiseghe, has said.

Mr Mwaiseghe said the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) had until March 31 to address their grievances or union members would go on strike.

He accused KCAA of failing to honour an agreement that would have resulted in an increase in salaries and allowances for the union workers.

"We are now giving the authority a seven-day ultimatum until March 31 to fulfil what they promised, failure to which our members will down their tools," he said.

The secretary general accused the management of failing to address the plight of workers. This was despite an agreement reached between them, that stipulated that KCAA would meet the workers' demands.

Betrayed trust

"Two days ago we were surprised when we received a proposal from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority which did not address the workers' demands as had been promised," he said.

Mr Mwaiseghe accused the authority of betraying the workers' trust.

"Unless they fulfil our demands by March 31, the union will have no other alternative but to mobilise its members to go on strike," he warned.

He said they had earlier been persuaded to call off the planned strike with the promise that their demands would be met, but they now believe that the authority is taking them for granted.

Efforts to get a comment from the Civil Aviation Authority failed, as officials referred all questions to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport, who could not be contacted.
