Speak Africa, an the organisation adopted by the African Union as the platform and communication strategy for the African youth agenda, is organising a massive multi-discipline arts contest as part of the activities to celebrate 2008 as the year of the African youth.
The competition, being organised by Speak Africa Talent Explosion 2008 has been set up as a "continental wide search for the best creative youth talent on the African continent."
All African youth between the ages of 13 and 30 years are being invited to participate in the multi-discipline arts contest in media (television, film video, print and radio) fashion, music, poetry, photography and painting.
Entries in these arts disciplines should be sent to the Unicef Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and should be received by the 14th May 2008. Winners will be announced during the Day of the African Child celebrations to be held in Addis Ababa on the 16th June 2008.
In the media category, African youths are invited to write one or two pages or 600 words of a news item or feature story, radio or television script indicating how local media should highlight priority youth issues as part of celebrating 2008 as the Year of the African Youth, what should be done to promote the ratification of the African Youth Charter and what issues should be featured prominently.
In the area of fashion, contestants are expected to design outfits that "will define the look of young Africa."
The designs should be in drawings or in photographs and should show the type of dress the youth should wear as well as an attire which should be a major statement about African identity.
In the arts and culture category, African youths are challenged to submit works of art, music, poetry, drama, prose and photographs which illustrate the "cultural vitality of the Africa continent" and which show that indeed the youth are the custodians of Africa's rich culture and heritage.
