Abuja

President Umaru Yar'Adua today challenged stakeholders in the Lake Chad Basin Commission to re-engineer its strategies for effective attainment of developmental goals.

He gave the charge in Abuja at the opening of the 54th Session of the Council of Ministers and the Preparatory Session of the Commission's 12th Summit.

Yar'Adua was represented by the minister of foreign affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe. He said the call had become necessary because the lake was being threatened by a combination of climate change and other activities.

The President noted that the livelihood of some 30 million people from six countries depended on the lake.

He declared: "Africa is looking up to the stakeholders to proffer solutions on the situation of the lake. We can't afford to fail them and we must not fail.

"Thirty years is long enough for a serious body to initiate programmes and execute it.

"The struggle must be seen as a war for survival, and the master plan must move from dream to reality," he said.

Yar'Adua expressed regret that the commission, like most organisations, had been distracted by a series of activities, which had resulted in loss of focus on high quality programmes.

He said the session must also focus attention on the growing challenges associated with regional security, economic integration and the water resources management.

The President noted that Nigeria had set the pace with various contributions, and challenged all other member-states to live up to their financial obligations.

The session is expected to discuss new initiatives, evolve a road map to steer the commission's activities and the 2008 budget.

The session precedes the Commission's 12th summit on Thursday. (NAN)
