A police detective based in Hwange appeared at the Hwange Magistrates' Courts yesterday facing allegations of insulting a Zanu-PF worker for wearing the party's regalia.

Detective Constable Manase Noko (29), who lives in Empumalanga suburb and is based at the CID Department at Hwange Police Station, was remanded out of custody to April 10 by Mr Peter Madiba.

Noko is being charged for violating Section 41(b) of the Criminal Law and Codification Act Chapter 9:23, for using threatening, abusive or insulting words intending to provoke the breach of peace.

According to the State, on February 20, at about 7.30am, the complainant, Cde Brighton Chiwanda, who is employed by Zanu-PF as a driver, went to Nechibondo Primary School bus stop, where the accused and other police officers were waiting for transport to go to work.

Cde Chiwanda was wearing a Zanu-PF T-shirt with a portrait of President Mugabe.

"It is alleged that the accused greeted the complainant and went on to say; 'Unofamba wakapfeka hembe yeparty inotipa nzara, dai wapfeka zvako yeMDC zvirinani'," said Noko, while poking his finger at President Mugabe's picture.

The police officers who were present when the alleged offence took place are State witnesses.

In his warned-and-cautioned statement, Noko, however, said "allegations put to me are too exaggerated".

He is denying the allegations and has insisted that he told Cde Chiwanda not to walk with them as some people might think that the police officers were partisan.

Other police officers, who are witnesses in the case, denied hearing Noko insulting Cde Chiwanda although they confirmed hearing him telling him that people would think that police officers were partisan if they were seen with him.
