Harare

THE European Commission in Harare together with five European Union member states and several cultural organisations have launched a photographic competition and exhibition aimed at enhancing environmental awareness in Zimbabwe.

Running under the theme "Art for Life" the exhibition will run at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe from May 12 till May 31 2008 where members of the public and other stakeholders will be able to view the photographs.

This event comes after the successful launch of an art competition and exhibition last year held under the theme "Peace through unity in diversity for Zimbabwean visual artists", which was a huge success.

The competition was aimed at highlighting issues to do with environmental degradation, environmental governance and poverty, at the same time raising awareness on environmental matters, promoting environmental social responsibility and sustainable use of natural resources.

"Photography is a universal language and we hope that the pictures will touch the lives of many as well as bring to our attention the harm that is happening to our environment," said Tonderayi Chiyindiko the co-ordinator of the project.

Photographs should be taken in the highest resolution possible providing a contrast of images of the environment.

Some photographs would depict the environment still intact and undisturbed, showing the beauty of an environment untouched whist others will depict the real damage inflicted on the environment through such things as illegal mining activities, deforestation, soil erosion and the impact of veld fires among other issues.

Each photographer would be allowed a maximum of 10 photographs and these should be submitted on a CD and work should be no larger than 50 X 50 cm and no smaller than 20X20 cm.

Only 40 photographs would be selected for the exhibition where they will be eligible for prizes.

Top three prizes of a total of US$850 will be awarded. The deadline for submission of photographs on CD is this Friday. A pre-selection process will be conducted on 3rd April 2008. Short-listed photographers will be contacted by Monday April 7, 2008.
