THE Zimbabwe Local Government Association has embarked on a voter and civic education campaign ahead of the harmonised March 29 elections.

Zilga secretary-general Mr Francis Duri said the project is meant to educate and inform the electorate that as stakeholders in civic issues they should go and cast their votes to choose people to represent them as councillors.

"We want to avoid cases where we have low voter turnouts for councillors like in the last election where as low as 17 percent turned out to vote in some wards," he said

Mr Duri said they were making use of both the electronic and print

media to get the information to the people.

"We are basically telling the electorate that they that determine the quality of service and fund the services and should therefore decide who represents their interests in council."

He said the smooth operation of the council demands that the electorate carefully exercises their constitutional right by electing dedicated and responsible leadership who promote the issue of smart partnerships between local authorities and civic society.

Mr Duri said their main thrust, however, was civic education through which they sought to educate people on the role and operations of local government and the importance of their participation in local government issues

He said they were also concerned with the gender dimension, as women had in the past shown little interest in local government issues.

"We hope to motivate and conscietise women to be more interested in local government issues through these voter education programmes," he said.

Mr Duri said the voter and civic education programmes were also aimed at helping aspiring councillors to understand what is expected of them when they are voted into office.
