THE Grain Marketing Board has received an additional 170 tonnes of maize from Malawi for Mashonaland East, as Government intensifies efforts to augment local supplies.
Acting provincial GMB depot manager for Mashonaland East Mr Simba Chigowa yesterday confirmed the deliveries from Malawi.
At the end of last week, Mr Chigowa said the maize had been distributed as follows: Hwedza depot received 60 tonnes, Mutoko 50 tonnes and Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe 60 tonnes.
He urged members of the public not to panic since the Government has put everything in place to ensure that the grain would be available.
Recently, the Government received 15 000 tonnes of maize from Malawi, South Africa and Zambia.
GMB acting general manager Mr Zvidzai Makwenda said that although there had been some challenges in the movement of maize from these countries, the situation had improved since the start of March.
"Maize is being moved by both rail and road trucks to receiving depots, like Aspindale in Harare, Bulawayo and Beitbridge" said Mr Makwenda.

GMB has also added Gweru and Kwekwe as receiving depots to cope with the increased movement of grain.
"Zimbabwe has some existing contracts in Malawi, Zambia and South Africa and to date the country has received 40 000 tonnes of maize imports from Zambia," he said. The grain is part of 150 000 tonnes targeted for importation.
Deliveries had been hamstrung by critical transport shortages, especially on the road front, where only 400 trucks are delivering. At least twice as many trucks are required for better inflows.
