Dar es Salaam

The Government is reportedly studying the possibility of adopting water recycling and treatment technology to help ease acute water shortage in urban centres in the country particularly, Dar es Salaam.

This is a novel idea despite the fact that it will be an additional financial burden on the authority which is currently struggling hard to rehabilitate its aged water supply infrastructure to serve the more than 4 million people in the city.

But the proposed water recycling and treatment technology requires expanse sanitation and sewerage systems to be able to function efficiently. However, Dar es Salaam Water and Sanitation Authority's (Dawasa) capacity to dispose wastewater is too low to adequately feed water treatment plants. The authority is reportedly operating only nine wastewater stabilisation ponds that cater for only ten per cent wastewater produced in the city.

Interestingly, a Dawasa official was last week quoted in the media saying funds to implement water treatment and improved sewerage system projects won't be a problem. She said the funds would be sourced from development partners and the Millennium Challenge basket fund.

We are told similar projects elsewhere including in neighbouring Zimbabwe, have helped end water blues for their urban populations. Treated water there is even used for drinking and cooking.

We ask all stakeholders to ensure that the two projects succeed for the benefit of us all.
