TOURISM is such an integral part of national development. Through tourism comes the much-needed foreign currency and jobs as the sector opens the country to the outside world.

In short, tourism keeps the national economy on the move as any growth recorded triggers the need for developing infrastructure such as the transports network, commerce and trade, as well as social amenities.

While the development of tourism in Zambia is centred on traditional areas like the Victoria Falls and Livingstone, the Luangwa and Kafue national parks, very little is spent on other potential attractions and resorts in various parts of the country. There are several other tourist attraction in Zambia that need exposure.

This exposure can only come about with investment and policies aimed at revitalising all areas gazetted as tourist attractions and resorts.

Government has committed itself to addressing the problems of poor infrastructure in the country, including roads and airports in tourist resorts.

It is, therefore, gratifying to see the strides being made in that direction with the Government releasing K700 million towards upgrading roads in Lusenga Plains National Park in Luapula Province.

This will go a long way in putting Lusenga on the world map and make it accessible to many people, local and international tourists included.

According to Kawambwa district commissioner, Wilbroad Mumba, the road network in the park totaling 240km will be graveled to facilitate easy access to various tourist sites in the park.

Last year, Government restocked the park with several species of animals that included zebras, kudus and impala.

This investment is expected to attract tourists to the area and we hope Zambians will respond to Government's programme of developing alternative tourism destinations in Zambia by learning to invest in the sector and touring.

Infrastructure development needs urgent attention in order for Zambia to enhance and sustain the inflow of tourists into the country throughout the year, and also to enable expansion of Zambian tourism to areas other than the traditional spots.

We hope the programme to rehabilitate roads in Lusenga will extend to other parks

The success of Lusenga will depend on what Zambians put in, and the sooner people realise that the tourism sector is the fastest growing industry and a major driving force in the world economy, the better.
