THE Task Force on Corruption has summoned Second Republican President, Dr Frederick Chiluba, to appear before its investigation officers over the Carlington maize deal.

Taskforce on Corruption public relations officer, Victor Makayi, said the Task Force had been investigating the case of a Canadian commodity supplier by the name of Carlington Sales Company.

Mr Makayi said the Canadian commodity supplier was being investigated following an agreement with the republic of Zambia in 1997/98 for the supply of maize at a cost of U.S.$24 million.

The statement indicated that the republic of Zambia transferred U.S.$7.8 million towards this contract, but which Carlington Sales never honoured as not a single bag of maize was ever delivered to Zambia.

Mr Makayi said a loss of over US$7.8 million of public funds was incurred and that Dr Chiluba was being called upon as he stood at the centre of the deal and was deemed to have been familiar with what happened.

"The Taskforce on Corruption has today (yesterday) served a callout for Dr Chiluba to appear at their offices on Thursday, March 27,2008 (tomorrow) at 10:00 hours," reads the statement in part.

Mr Makayi said the former president was expected to assist the task force in its effort to recover the money or in completing the task of investigations leading to the arrest and prosecution of people suspected to have conspired to defraud the State of the money.

He noted that investigations in the case were almost complete, but required a bit more clarification from some potential witnesses.

Dr Chiluba would be interviewed and officers expressed hope that he would give them utmost cooperation.

And Dr Chiluba's spokesperson, Emmanuel Mwamba, confirmed receiving the callout which was delivered at the former president's residence at 09:40 hours yesterday.
