Children were yesterday educated on the need to live in harmony with people of all races and ethnic groups.
The United Nations Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa organised an information day at its headquarters in Yaounde yesterday March 25 to commemorate the International Day for the elimination of racial discrimination celebrated every year on March 21. It was an occasion to raise awareness on the dangers of discrimination on the basis of race, sex or colour. The UN Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa calls on States of the sub region to reflect thoroughly on this subject and continue to take necessary actions to stop all forms of racial discrimination as a means to promote the respect of human rights. Yesterday's open door day was to sensitise young children on the effects and dangers of racial discrimination. Some 50 school children were selected from schools in Yaounde to share their ideas and experiences.
According to one of the organisers, Dorothée Onguene, the message is to help the student to eliminate all sorts of cruelties or racial and ethnic gaps between them. "From the discussions one could easily understand that the issue of ethnical discrimination is deep in Cameroon," she said. The United Nations Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa will continue to work with member States to facilitate the realisation of the agendas set for the complete elimination of the this form of abuse.
