Budget analyst at the United States Department of Commerce in America Yayah Gibril Kalokoh Wednesday declared his intention to run for the mayorship of Freetown in the forthcoming local council election under the banner of the All Peoples Congress (APC).

He said he was ready to contribute to the transformation of the country adding, "serving my country, specifically the capital in a time of leadership vacuum is timely." "If given the opportunity to serve as mayor, I will ensure that accountability is restored financially as well as making sure that effective representation of constituents' needs is addressed," he said.

Kalokoh said the Freetown City Council needs not only qualified and experienced people but also people with the vision and passion that can effect change in the communities they represent.

"Transparency and competition are the hallmarks of socio-economic development of every nation. Freetown is the bastion of our nation's power. Every Sierra Leonean must have a stake in what happens here," he said.

He said for the city to look greater than it is currently, Sierra Leoneans should not ask what the country can offer them but what they can do to develop Sierra Leone.

The council was recently fraught with leadership problems that consequently cost the position of the substantive mayor Witstanley Bankole-Johnson and ushered in the caretaker leadership of Herbert George Williams.
